Cargo Cults
My favourite Dylan Thomas quote goes,“Children in wonder watching the stars is the aim and the end.” It’s from Being But Men, which I commend to you. Meanwhile, I want to tell you about Cargo Cults. In the telling we’ll wander back towards wonder, via comparative cosmologies, wonder briefly about wondering, question whether quantum physics is akin to a cargo cult, and finish with a poem. It’s going to be great. Trust me. I wonder if you’ve heard of cargo cults. I was quite young when I was told, to my surprise and mild perturbation, that flotsam and jetsam from European merchant vessels would, from time to time, wash up on the shore of distant Melanesian islands.
