This latest offering from one of our best-loved authors digresses a little from his usual storytelling format in that it is based on a series of recollections about the protagonist after her death. Don’t be put off by this retrospective approach – this is an enjoyable and engrossing read about one woman’s struggle to come to terms with her own identity and her desire to realise her enormous potential. Through Romanian-born Athena, questions about our very existence, purpose and responsibility to others are voiced and answered in Coelho’s familiar, colourful style. Coelho has said that this work is the expression of his own feminine self, possibly explaining Athena’s sometimes rather gung-ho, carefree attitude to tripping around the globe with little consideration for her son, and perhaps this relationship is the only ‘sketchy’ area of an otherwise well-rounded read. All the main characters are very emotionally expressive. The Alchemist it is not, but as a modern day, real life take on what it means to live as an emerging, spiritually aware being, it holds its own and gives succour to the ever increasing number of ‘seekers’ who may be put off by the more traditional ‘mystic’ offerings where the central character is rarely of this realm. Were this tale ever to appear on the small screen, it could easily be mistaken for fact – a real indication of a well told work of fiction.
