Dance of the First Born

To the best of our knowledge the San (Bushmen) of the Kalahari are the oldest surviving culture on Earth. They are a remarkable people who have somehow survived a phenomenal onslaught from imperialism and modernity and yet still hold on to their cultural existence with a tenacity that defines them as a people. What is their secret? In their words, it is their shamanic trance dance. If the dance dies they cease to exist. In this follow-up article to ‘Stoneage NLP’ in issue 86, Greg Laws continues their miraculous story San hunter gatherers and their close relatives, the San herders, are the oldest inhabitants of southern Africa. The San are well known for their prolific rock art that adorns caves throughout the region. Most notable are the stunningly colourful murals from the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa and the vast number of paintings at Tsodilo Hills in Botswana. Tsodilo is an intense place with a powerful spiritual presence obvious to even the most sceptical visitor.
