Bee Shamanism
Simon Buxton reveals the spiritual link between bee and man. It is rarely disputed that the bee is our most ancient ally. They have been on the Earth since the Cenozoic period, some 55 million years, and surviving images from the civilisations of Old Europe indicate that next to serpents, bees are the creatures most often depicted. Both live in small, dark places, carry venom and issue forth from the hole at certain seasons of the year. But whereas serpents might be depicted as symbols of both ‘good’ or ‘evil’, bees are almost always regarded as beneficent. In my mid-20s I was introduced to a small group of men and women, headed by a Welshman, known as the Bee Master, who worked with an indefinably ancient, vibrant and entirely shamanic body of work regarding and revolving around the honey-bee and the hive. Over time I would come to know this Bee Master well, serving a formal apprenticeship with him that lasted 13 years. His thoughts were crystal clear and diamond hard, and yet within him there was room for considerable magic and wonder.
