Maintaining Optimism in the Modern World
Many would consider a perpetually optimistic person – especially in the light of current events – as deranged or living in the world of the absurd. However, leading life as a pessimist does not appear to be a viable option, if one intends to gain a deeper understanding of life. The question then is: How can one practise authentic optimism in a world that seems so full of despair? I put this and other questions to David L. Gardiner PhD, Associate Professor of Religion at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, who sheds light on what at first glance appears to be a paradox. Dr. Gardiner’s areas of expertise are in Buddhism, Japanese culture and religions of China and Japan.
